Dear Music Lovers,
As I celebrate my 25th year as Music Director of the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra, it gives me great pleasure to announce an exciting season of classical music favorites from Austria, Great Britain, France, Russia, Germany, and America.
It has become a tradition to open the WSO season with the great works of Beethoven. Our October program features pianist Mana Tonuko in the seldom heard Second Concerto. The symphony on this program, chosen by popular vote by the players in the WSO, will be Symphony No. 6, the Pastorale.
My longstanding connection with the Boston Symphony allows me to offer solo opportunities to some of their great players. This year, BSO cellist Owen Young will perform the beloved Variations on a Rococo Theme by Tchaikovsky. The big showpiece will be Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, with WSO’s brilliant concertmaster, MaeLynn Arnold, as the main character.
Holiday Pops this year takes a slightly different turn. Christmas is for Kids will feature several youngsters from past seasons taking turns in solo and ensemble arrangements, our traditional “Two Front Teeth” contest winner, and of course the annual visit from Santa Claus.
February, during Presidents’ month, we will present an All American program with works of the leading American composers Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin, with Aaron Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait.
We’ll have a fun Family Concert called Heroes and Superheroes with music of on-screen superheroes such as Batman, Superman, Spiderman, and even James Bond and Harry Potter. Kids are encouraged to wear costumes of their favorite characters. The narrated story this year is The Little Engine that Could. We are also inviting some real life local heroes, including band director Henry Platt - more about this as we get closer to the event.
Our Season Finale features a hometown young musician returning to the USA after her studies in Berlin. Julia Glenn will perform the beautiful and melodic Violin Concerto by Glazunov. The grand climax to the concert and the season, Brahms’ magnificent Symphony No. 1, is again the choice of the WSO players.
I hope our plans for the season please you and inspire to you subscribe to attend this wonderful series of musical favorites.
